Video game rental company GameFly is making major moves.
The company on Tuesday announced GameFly Streaming--a cloud-powered, Netflix-style subscription program for games. GameFly also revealed today that it had acquired streaming service Playcast, whose technology will power GameFly Streaming.
According to The Verge, GameFly's new streaming program offers bundles of games for a fixed price, which starts at $7/month. There are six bundles currently available, each containing seven games focused around a particular theme.
One bundle offers LEGO games, while another comes with adventure games such as Darksiders II and Batman Arkham titles.
GameFly Streaming also offers a pricier "gamer pack" that comes with 16 games for $10/month.
The one major catch is that GameFly Streaming is available only for Amazon Fire TV, which costs $100. All games are compatible with the $40 Amazon Fire TV controller. Games are streamed from a PC to the device.
Other companies have attempted to create the elusive "Netflix for games," with varying degrees of success. OnLive recently shut down, while PlayStation Now is just getting off the ground. For its part, Microsoft has also talked about a streaming service for Xbox One.
