iOS 9, which was released only five days ago, now powers over 50 percent of iPhones and iPads, according to Apple.
"iOS 9 is also off to an amazing start," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. It's "on pace to be downloaded by more users than any other software release in Apple's history."
I'd hazard a guess that the smaller download size and more intelligent installer which can make room for the upgrade by temporarily removing apps has helped lower upgrade resistance.
This, according to Apple, is the "fastest iOS adoption ever," which is some feat considering that the release didn't go all that smoothly. Many have been frustrated by a "Software Update Failed" error when trying to upgrade, while others found themselves stuck on a screen telling them to "Slide to Upgrade." There have also been widespread reports of apps crashing and locking up, not to mention the fact that upgrading can also kill off VPN access.
It's important to note that this data is based on devices accessing Apple's App Store, not total number of devices currently in the wild, but as a metric of devices in use it's reasonably valid since it counts app upgrades as well as users accessing the store over the past five days.
