Sony's Xperia Z5 Premium handset with 4K display starts rolling out next month and potential customers still have questions about that high-resolution screen works.
In September, the company shed a little more light on the 4K screen, noting that even though there's relatively little 4K content available, the Xperia Z5 Premium would show it. Everything else, Sony said would be rendered in 1080p resolution.
To further clarify, Sony on Thursday posted a Q&A about the 4K screen specifics.
Sony reiterated that 4K content will appear in native resolution, including any 4K video taken with the phone's camera as well as online 4K content but not that from Netflix and YouTube. Sony's own Sony's Movie and Album apps do support 4K playback.
While Netflix and YouTube can stream 4K media -- they look great on our new 50-inch 4K set, as do UHD movies from Amazon -- they're not optimized for mobile devices, Sony will upscale the 1080p video streams.
Since Android isn't quite ready for 4K rendering, the operating system and all apps are also shown at 1080p, reducing the GPU strain and improving battery life over a full 4K experience. Even screenshot captures are done at 1080p for this reason.
At the end of the day, you'll get 4K playback for captured vide and upscaled content from 1080p sources, which should provide a better viewing experience than on most other handsets currently available. And if streaming services decide to support mobile 4K content, the Xperia Z5 Premium is future-proofed and ready to handle it.
