With 1M paying organizations, Google Drive gets beefed up security

Google is extending privacy features from its Google Apps Vault to Google Drive in an effort to make security more robust in the cloud service. The company announced the news in a blog post on Monday, noting that it now has one million organizations paying to use Drive.

"To give businesses even more visibility and control over employee files, Google Drive will offer enhanced eDiscovery capabilities for Google Apps Vault. The same retention policies and legal hold capabilities currently available for email and chat have been extended to cover files in Google Drive. These capabilities help you meet your legal obligations and ensure that employee files are archived and available as long as needed, even if employees delete those files from their Drive."

Google Drive is also getting a security boost, having already completed SOC 2 and SOC 3 security audits while achieving IOS 27001 certification.

As of today, Google is adding the IOS/IEC 27018:2014 privacy standard to its compliance framework for Drive. The company says it doesn't use enterprise data stored in drive for any advertising activities, reiterating that your work data is yours.

The new features are added to the list of previous ones such as data encryption on by default, two-step verification and support for security keys through the FIDO Alliance.

Google says the additional privacy and security features are rolling out now in a limited fashion with widespread availability expected in the coming months.
